Bernanke Signals Fed Will Maintain Its Outlook for Low Rates

Dec. 8 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Open Market Committee will probably maintain its outlook for a long period of low interest rates next week as tight credit and high unemployment weigh on the economy, Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke signaled.

Fed officials meet for the last time this year Dec. 15-16 after a report last week showing employers cut the fewest jobs in November since the recession began in December 2007. The report prompted some investors to raise bets the Fed would increase rates by the third quarter of 2010.

Treasuries climbed yesterday after Bernanke set back those perceptions, saying the economy faces “formidable headwinds.” He repeated the language of the last Fed statement in November foreseeing an “extended period” of low rates and said inflation might subside while joblessness may fall at a pace that’s “slower than we would like.”

“Despite the positive surprise from last week’s employment report, it is way too early for the Fed to begin exiting,” said Mark Gertler, a professor of economics at New York University who worked with Bernanke on research on the Great Depression before he became Fed chairman. “When the time does come, however, the Fed will be prepared.”

Yields on two-year notes fell 7 basis points to 0.76 percent. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index fell 0.3 percent to 1,103.25 after rising as much as 0.4 percent.

The FOMC said last month that its benchmark interest rate, which has been close to zero for a year, would remain low as long as inflation is subdued and the unemployment rate fails to decline. Bernanke said yesterday those conditions haven’t changed.

Inflation Expectations

“Right now we are still looking at the extended period given that conditions remain -- low rates of utilization, subdued inflation trends and stable long-term inflation expectations,” the Fed chief said in response to a question after a speech at the Economic Club of Washington. “That remains where we are.”

The consumer price index, minus food and energy, rose at a 1.7 percent annual pace in October, up from 1.5 percent the previous month. The core inflation rate rose at a 1.4 percent pace in August, the lowest rate since February 2004.

“We are going to have to continue to look at the economy,” Bernanke told moderator David Rubenstein, president of the economic club and co-founder of the Carlyle Group, the private equity firm. “Obviously there has been some signs of strength recently, we will want to factor that in as we talk about this next week.”

Dudley Comments

In separate remarks yesterday, New York Fed president William Dudley said the unemployment rate is “much too high.” If labor markets remain weak and inflation low, “it will be appropriate to keep the federal funds target exceptionally low for an extended period,” he told the Columbia University World Leaders Forum in New York.

Bernanke explained why the economy is unlikely to bounce back quickly. The job market “remains weak” while “bank- dependent borrowers” such as households and small business are having difficulty obtaining loans, he said. Consumer spending is “unlikely to grow rapidly” as unemployment weighs on confidence, he said.

Consumer credit in the U.S. fell by $3.51 billion, or 1.7 percent at an annual rate, to $2.48 trillion in October, according to a Fed report released yesterday. Borrowing dropped by $8.77 billion in September, less than previously estimated. Consumer credit has fallen for ninth straight months.

Growth Forecast

U.S. central bankers said last month the economy will expand in a range of 2.5 to 3.5 percent in 2010, according to the central tendency of their outlook, which excludes the three highest and three lowest projections.

That rate of growth will only drive unemployment down to a 9.3 to 9.7 percent range next year, Fed officials forecast. More than 7.2 million jobs have been lost since the start of the recession.

“We still have some way to go before we can be assured that the recovery will be self-sustaining,” the Fed Chairman said. “My best guess at this point is that we will continue to see modest economic growth next year -- sufficient to bring down the unemployment rate, but at a pace slower than we would like.”

Bernanke “certainly hasn’t done a 180 degree turn because of one payroll number,” said Michael Feroli, economist at JPMorgan Chase & Co. in New York. Risks to the economy “don’t seem balanced at all” in Bernanke’s view.

JPMorgan Chase predicts the Fed to leave interest rates unchanged until the second quarter of 2011. Feroli said that an expansion one percentage point faster than the economy’s potential growth rate, which JPMorgan estimates at around 2.25 percent, would lower then unemployment rate by around four tenths of 1 percent in a year.

Chevy Volt Gets 230 MPG City EPA Rating | GM-VOLT : Chevy Volt ...

Press Release:

Chevrolet Volt Expects 230 mpg in City Driving

* First mass-produced vehicle to claim more than 100 mpg composite fuel economy
* Tentative EPA methodology results show 25 kilowatt hours/100 miles electrical efficiency in city cycle
* Plugging in daily is key to high-mileage performance

WARREN, Mich. - The Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle is expected to achieve city fuel economy of at least 230 miles per gallon, based on development testing using a draft EPA federal fuel economy methodology for labeling for plug-in electric vehicles.

The Volt, which is scheduled to start production in late 2010 as a 2011 model, is expected to travel up to 40 miles on electricity from a single battery charge and be able to extend its overall range to more than 300 miles with its flex fuel-powered engine-generator.

“From the data we’ve seen, many Chevy Volt drivers may be able to be in pure electric mode on a daily basis without having to use any gas,” said GM Chief Executive Officer Fritz Henderson. “EPA labels are a yardstick for customers to compare the fuel efficiency of vehicles. So, a vehicle like the Volt that achieves a composite triple-digit fuel economy is a game-changer.”

According to U.S. Department of Transportation data, nearly eight of 10 Americans commute fewer than 40 miles a day http://tinyurl.com/U-S-DOTStudy .

“The key to high-mileage performance is for a Volt driver to plug into the electric grid at least once each day,” Henderson said.

Volt drivers’ actual gas-free mileage will vary depending on how far they travel and other factors, such as how much cargo or how many passengers they carry and how much the air conditioner or other accessories are used. Based on the results of unofficial development testing of pre-production prototypes, the Volt has achieved 40 miles of electric-only, petroleum-free driving in both EPA city and highway test cycles.

Under the new methodology being developed, EPA weights plug-in electric vehicles as traveling more city miles than highway miles on only electricity. The EPA methodology uses kilowatt hours per 100 miles traveled to define the electrical efficiency of plug-ins. Applying EPA’s methodology, GM expects the Volt to consume as little as 25 kilowatt hours per 100 miles in city driving. At the U.S. average cost of electricity (approximately 11 cents per kWh), a typical Volt driver would pay about $2.75 for electricity to travel 100 miles, or less than 3 cents per mile.

The Chevrolet Volt uses grid electricity as its primary source of energy to propel the car. There are two modes of operation: Electric and Extended-Range. In electric mode, the Volt will not use gasoline or produce tailpipe emissions when driving. During this primary mode of operation, the Volt is powered by electrical energy stored in its 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

When the battery reaches a minimum state of charge, the Volt automatically switches to Extended-Range mode. In this secondary mode of operation, an engine-generator produces electricity to power the vehicle. The energy stored in the battery supplements the engine-generator when additional power is needed during heavy accelerations or on steep inclines.

“The 230 city mpg number is a great indication of the capabilities of the Volt’s electric propulsion system and its ability to displace gasoline,” said Frank Weber, global vehicle line executive for the Volt. “Actual testing with production vehicles will occur next year closer to vehicle launch. However, we are very encouraged by this development, and we also think that it is important to continue to share our findings in real time, as we have with other aspects of the Volt’s development.”

Ultrasn0w : Unlock iPhone 3G with OS 3.0

The cat and mouse game will enter its next round as Apple will release iPhone
3.0 firmware later today. As usual, the iPhone-Dev team has been working ahead of time for iPhone 3G unlock methods. On Tuesday , MuscleNerd, a member of the iPhone-Dev team, showed up live demo of carrier unlock working on the official iPhone 3.0 firmware. The new method of carrier unlock for iPhone 3G is code named ultrasn0w by iPhone-Dev team.

The basic aim of this unlock is to enable the use of iPhone 3G with any carrier and not restricting it to be locked to a single carrier. Back in December, the iPhone-Dev team showed its first version of iPhone 3G unlock through a method called yellowsn0w. Ultrasn0w is the new version of Yellowsn0w for the iPhone 3.0 firmware.

View the ultrasn0w demo to unlock iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0 firmware. You can Skip ahead to two minutesin the video.

The iPhone-dev team wants to play safe and will launch ultrasn0w on June 19. Reason being that Apple might fix the hole exploited by the iPhone-Dev team. The other tools like PwnageTool and QuickPwn are under testing to work fine with iTunes 8.2 verison. The team didn't specify when the jailbreak for iPhone 3.0 firmware based devices would be rolled out.

Twitter Update : MuscleNerd updated through his Twitter account that
It's fine to install 3.0 now if you don't need to unlock til Friday. When you jailbreak make sure it's from our links tho to avoid hassles.

About the new iPhone 3G S, the iPhone-Dev team stated that it runs the similar version of software. But the iPhone-Dev team prefers to stay mum on whether the iPhone 3G S will be jailbroken or not.

What is ultrasnOw ?
Ultrasn0w is basically yellowsn0w for the iPhone OS 3.0 firmware. It will unlock the iPhone 3G on firmware 3.0. You may no longer need your turbo sim cards to unlock your iPhone 3G.

Who made ultrasn0w?
Ultrasn0w was created by the Dev Team.

When will ultrasn0w be released?
Ultrasn0w will be released on Friday. You won't be able to unlock your iPhone 3G just yet, the Dev Team is working on fixing some bugs before they release it. Who knows, maybe they'll be able to release an unlock for the iPhone 3G S on Friday as well.

The iPhone OS 3.0 firmware update will be released on June 17, 2009.
Finally we'll be able to

cut, copy, paste between apps
view native apps in landscape mode

American Idol Top 5 Results: Matt Giraud Penalized for Trying to Sing Like Megan Joy

In the totally overblown intro (sorry, that's like complaining that a cow moos), Ryan Seacrest seems to insinuate that there will be a shocker of a cast-off tonight. That can only mean it's Adam Lambert, because any of the others are expected to go at some point. And finally when the show is actually endorsing a gay winner; in the Ford commercial, a vehicle shoots rainbows. Eek!

Taylor Hicks is in town, as is Natalie Cole. And Jamie Foxx is performing his single "Blame It." But first we get a standards medley from the Top 5, which is well-served by four of them being guys. The group sings actually start to sound better with fewer contestants, which is weird; usually the fewer voices, the more awkward. Guess the lip-synching was a good move.

The Idols ruin a perfectly good kitchen trying to make birthday cakes for Allison and Danny. Their landlords hired a maid service to clean up, bill totaling an infuriating $6,000. Seriously, the Ace of Cakes cake that tab could have bought...

The Verdicts
Ryan recaps the performances individually, dividing the group into two. They are Kris and Matt, and Allison and Danny. Adam has to choose which group he belongs to, and remarkably, Adam actually makes a choice. And he chooses wrong. Adam joins Kris and Matt in the Bottom Three.

Natalie Cole is a fox! Season 5 Idol Taylor Hicks is a country singer? And he stands like he has to pee.

Back to business! Kris Allen is safe.

Jamie Foxx is very lucky someone invented Auto-Tune.

And finally, the shock that is not: Matt Giraud is indeed going home. In his reprise of "My Funny Valentine," he again employs a Megan Joy vocal quality that truly earns him his one-way ticket back to Kalamazoo.

Dead Man Inc

Tonight at 9 the History Channel's long-running Gangland series features Dead Man Inc., of Baltimore and its easterly suburbs. (HT Baltimore Crime Blog). Dead Man Inc. was allegedly approached by the Black Guerrilla Family to do a bit of dirty work.

John Rich - "Shutting Detroit Down"

I’m becoming increasingly annoyed by the elitist, condescending liberal response to the teabaggers. Yeah, the teabagger protests were a bit incoherent and some of the participants are loonies. It was the same way in the early days of the antiwar movement (some say it still is.) I know, I helped organize antiwar protests back then. The left ignores the very real grievances of the white working class at its peril. One real good way for progressives to start would be by throwing their too-apparent class biases out the window. Then listen to what the working class they claim to want to organize is actually saying.

This John Rich video “They’re Shutting Detroit Down” features Mickey Rourke and Kris Kristofferson. Rich, judging from his website, is right wing. Kristofferson is a long-time leftie. So this isn’t really about traditional politics at all.

“Shutting Detroit Down” has a chance to be one of the most memorable country songs of its time because it’s about a very real issue - our failing economy. People will look back in 10-20 years and remember the song as a reminder of these difficult times.

It’s very critical of Wall Street people who are living it up while “in the real world, they’re shutting Detroit down.” With Detroit, obviously, meaning the American auto industry and workers everywhere.

Lyrics

Now I see all these big shots cryin’ on my evening news
About how they’re losin’ billions and how it’s up to me and you
To come running to the rescue

Well pardon me if I don’t shed a tear ’cause they’re selling make believe
And we don’t buy that here

Cause in the real world they’re shutting Detroit down
While the boss man takes his bonus pay and jets out of town
And DC’s bailing out the bankers as the farmers auction ground
Yeah while they’re living it up on Wall Street in that New York City town
Here in the real world they’re shuttin’ Detroit down.

Well that old man’s been workin’ in that plant most all of his life
Now his pension plan’s been cut in half and he can’t afford to die
And it’s a crying shame ‘cause he ain’t the one to blame
When I look down and see his caloused hands
Let me tell you friend it gets me fightin’ mad

Symptoms Of Automysophobia

Like all fears and phobias, Automysophobia is created by the unconscious mind as a protective mechanism. At some point in your past, there was likely an event linking being dirty and emotional trauma. while the original catalyst may have been a real-life scare of some kind, the condition can also be triggered by myriad, benign events like movies, TV, or perhaps seeing someone else experience trauma.

Symptoms of automysophobiaI includes your fear of being dirty can result in the following symptoms: breathlessness, dizziness, dry mouth, excessive sweating, nausea, feeling sick, shaking, heart palpitations, inability to think clearly, a fear of dying, becoming mad or losing control, a sensation of detachment from reality or a full blown anxiety attack. There are quite a few people who suffer from Automysophobia. Most sufferers are surprised to learn that they are far from alone in this surprisingly common, although often unspoken, phobia.

It is an intense fear of something that poses little or no actual danger. While adults with Automysophobia realize that these fears are irrational, they often find that facing, or even thinking about facing, the feared situation brings on a panic attack or severe anxiety.

A lot of talking about problems keeps people in the stuck state and is counterproductive. So people who really want to talk about their Automysophobia because they are not really ready to let them go may not achieve optimal results. People like this may be better satisfied with talk therapy, even if it means extensive sessions, much higher expense and a lower success rate. But it is what some people want and seem to need.

Automysophobia does respond really well to energy psychology. Energy psychology is an emerging method that is rapidly gaining favor because in studies it is shown to be rapid, safe, effective and long-lasting. Automysophobia can severely disrupt normal life, interfering with school, work, or social relationships. Defined as a persistent, abnormal, and unwarranted fear of being dirty, each year this surprisingly common phobia causes countless people needless distress.

To add insult to an already distressing condition, most Automysophobia therapies take months or years and sometimes even require the patient to be exposed repeatedly to their fear. It is particularly cruel as automysophobia can be eliminated with the right methods and just 24 hours of commitment by the phobic individual.

Automysophobia and Fear of Being Dirty being the most common - the problem often significantly impact the quality of life. It can cause panic attacks and keep people apart from loved ones and business associates. Symptoms typically include shortness of breath, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea, and overall feelings of dread, although everyone experiences automysophobia in their own way and may have different symptoms.

Though a variety of potent drugs are often prescribed for Automysophobia, side effects and/or withdrawal symptoms can be severe. Moreover, drugs do not cure Automysophobia or any other phobia.Phobia-fear-release
